What is Taiji?

Taiji

Taiji, or to give it its full name, Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan), is a system of exercise which is practiced as though in slow motion. Learning to relax fully on the inside and the outside is the key to calm and graceful movement in all aspects of life. Taiji is a health exercise, a meditation in movement and a martial art.

Moving slowly allows space to become aware of those parts of the body where we may be holding unnecessary tension. Using this awareness we are able to encourage both physical and mental relaxation, thereby developing a greater freedom of movement in a natural, non-competitive way.

The Short Form is taught over a period of forty weeks with one class each week. Whether the student has come to release stress, learn meditation, increase fitness levels or explore the martial aspects of Taiji, as beginners, everyone is learning the same basic structures (physical and energetic) and principles within a solo sequence. These are the foundation which you can then build upon to follow whichever direction your interest lies. As everyone in the class is learning the same Form together, a supportive environment is created.

You do not need any previous experience in order to attend any beginners class.
